THE GENERAL DATA


The prevention

The dust formed as a result of deterioration of overlays and accumulating on components of the brake mechanism, can contain hazardous to health asbestos. Do not blow this dust by means of compressed air and do not inhale it! Do not use solvents on the basis of gasoline for dust removal. The dust should be washed off a special cleaner of brake system or methyl spirit in drain capacity. After rubbing of components of brake system by a damp rag this rag and contents of drain capacity should be held in the closed and signed container. Further whenever possible try to use components not containing asbestos.



The remark

Except checks through the established intervals of time a condition of brake mechanisms it is necessary to spend each time at removal of wheels or at occurrence of signs of malfunction in system. For driving safety the checks of brake system described below procedure are most important of all procedures made by you on car service.


Signs of malfunctions in brake system

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Disk brake mechanisms can have the built in indicators of deterioration of frictional overlays which signal that deterioration of overlays has reached critical size. Thus overlays should be changed immediately, differently brake disks will be damaged also by it expensive repair is required.
2. Any of listed below signs can specify in potential defect of brake system:
a) At squeezing of a pedal of a brake the car "withdraws" in one party;
b) Brake mechanisms at braking publish scraping or squealing sounds;
c) the brake Pedal has an excessive course;
d) the brake Pedal pulses (it normally only at system ABS work);
e) leaks of a brake liquid (usually on a tyre or wheel inside) Are observed.
3. In case of detection at least one of these signs immediately examine brake system.

Brake lines and hoses

The remark

In brake system basically steel brake tubes, except for the flexible reinforced hoses at forward wheels and as connections at the back bridge are used. Regular survey of all these lines is very important.


PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Park the car on an equal platform and switch off the engine. Remove caps from wheels. Ослабьте, but do not remove bolts of fastening of all four wheels.

4. Check up all brake lines and hoses on presence of cracks and attritions in their external covering, leaks, swellings and deformations. Check up brake hoses in forward and back parts of the car on presence of signs of a softening, cracks, deformations or deterioration as a result of a friction about other components. Check up all штуцерные connections on presence of signs of leaks and make sure of reliability of fastening of all bolts and clips of brake hoses.

Disk brake mechanisms

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. If it has not been made yet, поддомкратьте the car and reliably establish it on support.
2. Now it is possible to see supports of disk brake mechanisms in which are колодки. In each support are available external and internal колодки - it is necessary to check both those and others.
3. Estimate a thickness колодок, having glanced in a viewing aperture in the support case. If the thickness of frictional overlays makes 2.0 mm or less or if they are worn out on the one hand more than with another колодки it is necessary to replace (see the Head the Brake system). Remember that frictional overlays are usually pasted on a metal substrate колодки - its thickness should not be considered at measurement. Always replace колодки on both parties of the car (in the complete set on one axis) even if one of them is worn out only, otherwise braking process will be non-uniform.
4. Remove supports, without disconnecting brake hoses (the Brake system see the Head).
5. Check up a condition of a brake disk. Examine it on presence of furrows, deep scratches and overheat sites (they look as the blue or decoloured stains). At detection of signs of damages or deterioration the disk can be removed and pierced in a mechanical workshop; if there is no such possibility, it is necessary to replace it. Both in that and in other case it is necessary to replace or pierce both disks even if one of them is worn out only. Drum-type brake mechanisms

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Using instructions of the Head Brake system, remove back brake drums.
2. Measure a thickness of frictional overlays on boots of back brake mechanisms and examine them on presence of signs of pollution by a brake liquid or greasing. If overlays are pasted to a boot substrate, measurement of their thickness is made from a substrate surface, as is shown in drawing (); in case overlays приклепаны to boot metal, measurement is made from a surface of an overlay to tops of heads of rivets.
If the overlay has a thickness within 2.0 mm over heads of rivets or the metal basis, replace boots. Boots are subject to replacement also треснутые, заполированные to shine and polluted by a brake liquid or greasing. Replacement procedure is described in the Head Brake system.
3. Check up a condition of coupling and keeping springs of boots, and also the adjusting mechanism. Make sure that all these components are correctly established and are in working order. The worn out or deformed springs can serve as the reason of premature deterioration of frictional overlays.
4. Check up wheel cylinders on presence of signs of leaks, accurately having removed protective rubber covers. Presence of insignificant traces of a moisture under covers is supposed. If under them the brake liquid is found out or it follows from the wheel cylinder it is necessary to repair or replace cylinders capitally (see the Head the Brake system).
5. Check up drums on presence of deep scratches, furrows of cracks and перегретых sites which look as the decoloured stains. If the revealed defects cannot be eliminated by means of an emery paper, the drum should be pierced in a workshop (the Brake system for more detailed information see the Head).
6. Following instructions of the Head Brake system, establish brake drums.
7. Establish wheels, but yet do not lower the car.

Lay brake

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. The elementary, and it is possible, the most obvious way of check of work of a lay brake is car installation on an abrupt slope with the cocked brake and transmission in neutral position (at check you should be in the car). If the lay brake does not keep the car from скатывания, it is necessary to make its adjustment as it is described in the Head Brake system.
